How do I talk to a parent about care?
Practical, compassionate guidance for one of the hardest conversations a family can have.
5 min read
Bringing up care with a parent can feel daunting. It touches on independence, pride and a lifetime of roles shifting. A little thought beforehand can make the conversation far easier.
Start with what care makes possible
Focus on what care preserves — staying at home, keeping routines, remaining independent — rather than what someone can no longer do. Framing matters enormously.
Choose the right moment
Pick a quiet, unhurried time. Avoid raising it during a stressful event or a hospital stay if you can.
Listen, do not lead
Ask open questions: 'How are things feeling at the moment?' 'What would make day-to-day life easier?' Let them set the pace.
Offer choices, not decisions
Present options rather than outcomes. 'Would it help if someone came in to help with a few things?' gives space for agreement.
It is okay to take time
These conversations often happen over weeks, not minutes. The goal is not to win an argument — it is to keep trust while you find a way forward together.
If you would like support in having this conversation, we are happy to talk it through with you.
