You want to be there for your mum or dad, but life doesn't always make that possible. You may live some distance away, have a demanding job, children of your own and a hundred other things to manage. You call regularly and visit when you can, but there's always that nagging worry in the back of your mind: Are they really okay?

Perhaps you've started to notice little changes. Getting dressed in the morning takes longer, meals aren't always being prepared, medication is sometimes forgotten, or they're simply spending more time alone. Nothing may seem serious enough to warrant major changes, but you can sense that they could do with a little more support.

When you suggest getting some help, they may be quick to say they can manage. And you understand why. Nobody wants to feel that they're losing their independence or that their children are having to look after them.

Homecare doesn't have to mean taking that independence away. Sometimes it's simply having someone there at the right time of day to provide a little practical help and reassurance. A carer can help your parent get ready in the morning, prepare a meal, provide medication reminders, make sure they're comfortable and safe, and spend some time with them.

That companionship can be just as important as the practical support. Having someone to talk to, share a cup of tea with or simply spend some time together can make a real difference, particularly if your parent is living alone.

For you, it can bring reassurance too. You know someone has been there. You have someone who can tell you how your parent is doing and let you know if they've noticed anything that concerns them. You're no longer trying to keep everything going from a distance.

And that doesn't make you any less of a son or daughter.

You are still there for the important moments. You can still make the phone calls, visit at the weekend and spend time together without every visit feeling like another list of jobs that need to be done.

Sometimes asking for a little help isn't about doing less for your parent. It's about making sure they have the support they need when you can't be there yourself.

Not sure what support your parent needs?
