Coming home from hospital can be a huge relief. You're back in your own home, your own bed and familiar surroundings. But it can also be the moment when you realise just how much your recovery is going to take out of you.

You may have been told you're ready to leave hospital, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're ready to manage everything you used to do. Getting washed and dressed, preparing something to eat, moving around the house or remembering your medication can suddenly feel much harder than it did before.

Even simple things can take more energy when you're recovering.

Your family may want to be there for you, but they can't always be. They may be working, looking after children or living too far away to visit every day. That can leave everyone feeling worried. You may not want to keep asking for help, while your family may be wondering whether you're managing safely when they're not there.

Having someone visit at home can make those first days and weeks feel much more manageable.

A carer can provide personal care, help you get washed and dressed, prepare meals, provide medication reminders and offer support while you gradually regain your strength. They can also provide companionship during what can sometimes be a lonely and frustrating period of recovery.

Just having someone reliable arrive at an agreed time can provide reassurance when everything else still feels a little uncertain.

And support doesn't have to mean you're going to need care permanently. You may simply need some extra help while you recover. As your strength and confidence return, the amount of support you need can change too.

Recovery takes time, and everyone's recovery is different. Some days you'll feel stronger and others may be more difficult. That's okay.

What matters is having the right support around you while you find your feet again.

You don't have to rush your recovery or try to manage everything alone. With a little help at home, you can concentrate on getting stronger, rebuilding your confidence and gradually getting back to doing the things that matter to you.
